Welcome to our sewing and fiber arts classes! Here you will find the complete list and description of classes offered. The class calendar will guide you to where the classes are being held and how to register.

 

SEWING CLASSES

 


 

BEGINNER SEWING

· 2 sessions, 2 hours each

· Prerequisite: Students will have no prior experience or very little experience using a sewing machine.

· Class size: Minimum 3, maximum 8

What you’ll learn:

Session 1 Parts of a sewing machine Care and Maintenance of sewing machine Learn to sew straight line, curved line, between lines on paper.

Session 2 Types of needles Types of fabric Sew on fabric Make a fabric basket
 

 

 

 

 

GARMENT SEWING 101 MEASUREMENT

.2 hours

· Prerequisite: Beginner.

 · Class Size: Min 1 student, maximum 6

Students will wear leggings and athletic top (fitting but not tight). Upon sign up, instructor will provide more information needed to prepare for measurement taking, 

What you’ll learn: How to take your measurements. Instructor will take student’s measurements.

GARMENT FITTING/SEWING 201 – USING MEASUREMENTS TO MODIFY PATTERN AND PREPARE FABRIC FOR CONSTRUCTION

· 2 hours

· Prerequisite: Beginner. Student must know how to use sewing machine. Students must have set of measurements

 · Class Size: Minimum 1 student, maximum 6

Students will bring their pattern, fabric and basic sewing tools. Upon sign up, (prior to class) instructor will provide pattern number and type of fabric to bring to class.

What you’ll learn: How to read, use and modify a pattern based on measurements obtained in prior class or using one’s own devised measurements. Preparation of fabric. Interfacing areas of garment.

 

GARMENT SEWING 301- CONSTRUCTION OF GARMENT: SKIRT OR BLOUSE

. 4 hours

· Prerequisite: Beginner. Student must know how to use sewing machine. Student must have set of measurements, altered pattern, prepared fabric and be ready to construct a garment (not to exceed intermediate sewing level)

 · Class Size: Minimum 1 student, maximum 6

Students will bring their sewing machine, pattern, fabric and basic sewing tools.

What you’ll learn: garment construction based on pattern directions, tips on industry garment construction. Students should be able to finish their garment or be confident to finish on their own.

 

ALTERING READY TO WEAR

· 3 hours

 · Prerequisite: Beginner – Intermediate level Student must have used a sewing machine and completed basic items such as PJ’s, pillow, top.

 · Class size: Minimum of 3 students, maximum 8 students

 What you’ll learn: This class will show the student how to properly alter

· Pants – shorten and hem

 · Sleeves – shorten and hem

 · Downsize top

· Alter waist of skirt or pants.

 
 

ZIPPERS!

 2 hours

· Prerequisite: Beginner – intermediate level Student must have used a sewing machine and completed basic items

· Minimum of 3 students, maximum of 8 students

What you’ll learn: This class will show the student 3 methods of inserting a zipper into a garment

 · Centered zipper

 · Lapped zipper

· Invisible zipper

 Students are encouraged to bring their sewing machine, zippers and fabric pieces to practice. A list of items will be provided by the instructor prior to the class.

 

 

 HEMS AND SEAMS!

· 2 hours

· Prerequisite: Beginner – intermediate level Student must have used a sewing machine and completed basic items

· Minimum of 1 student, maximum of 8 students

What you’ll learn: This class will show the student multiple methods of hemming a garment using different fabrics

Students are encouraged to bring their sewing machine and fabric pieces to practice. Sheer fabric will be provided for demo of various seam finishes.

 

PILLOWS!

· 2 hours

· Prerequisite: None, however if student wishes to make pillows, beginning sewing experience is needed.

· Minimum of 3 students, maximum of 8 students

What you’ll learn: Student will learn various methods of making pillows, including, plain square pillow, lapped zippered pillow, flanged pillow, how to make piping, how to insert cording.

HANDBAG & PURSES TECHNIQUE SEWING CLASS

. 2 hours

Prerequisite: None.

· Minimum of 3 student, maximum of 6 students

What you’ll learn: Student will learn professional methods of making handbags, totes and purses.  This is a techniques class and will consist of lecture only.

 

 

 

QUILTING

 

 

 

 


 

BEGINNING QUILTING

 · 5 sessions, 2 hours each

· Prerequisite: Student will have experience using a sewing machine and sewing simple items

. · Minimum of 3 students, maximum of 8 students

What you’ll learn: Students will learn 9 basic blocks and finishing techniques Each session, the student will complete 2 blocks the last session will be one block, binding and finishing the quilt. Students will be provided with a list of items to bring to class.

 

 

CRAFTING

 

 KUMIHIMO

· 2 hours

· Prerequisite: None

· Minimum of 3 students, maximum of 8 students

What you’ll learn: Kumihimo is the traditional art of Japanese braiding dating back well over 1300 years. It consists of round, square and flat braids. Students will learn 3 different braiding techniques. A kit fee of $10 payable to the instructor. Students will be provided with a variety of threads, yarns, ribbons as well as 3 Kumihimo disks.

 

 

 

 FLOWER POUNDING

· 2 hours

· Prerequisite: None

 · Minimum of 3 students, maximum of 8 students

What you’ll learn: Flower pounding is the technique of reverse dyeing on fabric using organic items. Basically, you are pounding the pigment contained in flowers and/or greens and transferring it to treated fabric. Students will create their own masterpieces using available flowers and greens. Instructions will be provided to assist in obtaining the best results. This class has a kit fee of $5 payable to the instructor. The fee will provide each student with two 18X18 pieces of treated fabric.

 

 

THREAD PAINTING

· 2 hours

· Prerequisite: Student must have a sewing machine with capability of dropping feed dogs

· Minimum of 1 student, maximum of 8 students

What you’ll learn: Student will learn free motion stitching using various threads to “Paint” a scene.

Students will be provided with a list of items to bring to class.

 

 

WET FELTING

· 2 hours

· Prerequisite: None

· Minimum of 3 students, maximum of 8 students

What you’ll learn: Wet felting is the method of interlocking and compacting wool fibers which are first drenched in soap water and then rubbed until fabric has the same thickness. You will be creating a piece of felt using the wet felting technique and will be provided with many ideas of how and where to use your creation. Instructor will provide materials.

 

NEEDLE FELTING

· 2 hours

· Prerequisite: None

 · Minimum of 3 students, maximum of 8 students

What you’ll learn: Needle felting is the art of matting wool fibres together using a special needle with notches cut out of it to create felt. You will learn the types and size of needles to use, the different roving suitable for needle felting and you will create a felted piece of your choosing. Instructor will provide materials and roving.

 

BRANCH WEAVING

 · 2 hours

· Prerequisite: None

· Minimum of 3 students, maximum of 8 students

 What you’ll learn: Branch weaving can be simple or complex depending on how much work you want to put into it. Once you warp your branch, you can become as creative as you want with the weft. Warp and weft are the two basic components used in weaving to turn thread or yarn into fabric. The lengthwise or longitudinal warp yarns are held stationary in tension on a frame or loom or branch while the transverse weft (sometimes woof) is drawn through and inserted over and under the warp. A requirement list will be provided 2 weeks prior to class following sign up .

 

KNITTING and CROCHET

 DIFFERENT  KNITTED CAST ONS! 

· 2 hours

· Prerequisite: Capable of knitting at beginner level, knit and purl.

 · Minimum of 1 student, maximum of 6 students

What you’ll learn: Student will learn various methods of casting on depending on the requirement of the knitted piece.

 

 

DIFFERENT  KNITTED CAST OFFS!

· 2 hours

· Prerequisite: Capable of knitting at beginner level, knit and purl.

 · Minimum of 1 student, maximum of 6 students

What you’ll learn: Student will learn various methods of casting off depending on the requirement of the knitted piece.

 

TUNISIAN CROCHET

· 2 hours

· Prerequisite: None

 · Minimum of 3 students, maximum of 8 students

What you’ll learn: Tunisian crochet or Afghan crochet is a type of crochet that uses an elongated hook, often with a stopper on the handle end. It is considered to be a mixture of crocheting and knitting. This is because it requires you to hold all your stitches on the hook in the same way as you would knit. You will learn as many as 4-5 basic stitches. A requirement list will be provided prior to class following sign up .

 

 

MACHINE EMBROIDERY

MACHINE EMBROIDERY BASICS!

· 2 hours

· Prerequisite: Sewing machine with embroidery unit.

· Minimum of 1 student, maximum of 8 students

What you’ll learn: Student will learn the basics of machine embroidery, thread types, stabilizers, various available software to enhance your projects.

 

 

MACHINE EMBROIDERY ON VARIOUS MEDIA: METAL!

· 2 hours

· Prerequisite: Sewing machine with embroidery unit.

· Minimum of 1 student, maximum of 8 students

What you’ll learn: Student will learn how to embroider on soft metal, tension, thread, suitable designs.

Students will create a project to take home. 

KIT FEE $10 payable to instructor. Students will be provided with a list of items to bring to class.

 

MACHINE EMBROIDERY ON VARIOUS MEDIA:  SCREEN!

· 2 hours

· Prerequisite: Sewing machine with embroidery unit.

· Minimum of 1 student, maximum of 8 students

What you’ll learn: Student will learn how to embroider on window screen, tension, thread, suitable designs.

Students will create a project to take home.  Students will be provided with a list of items to bring to class.

 

 

MACHINE EMBROIDERY ON VARIOUS MEDIA:  Organza on Glass Blocks!

· 2 hours

· Prerequisite: Sewing machine with embroidery unit.

· Minimum of 1 student, maximum of 8 students

What you’ll learn: Student will learn how to embroider on window screen, tension, thread, suitable designs.

Students will create a project to take home.  Students will be provided with a list of items to bring to class.
